Jacksonville Concrete Patios

Custom outdoor living slabs built for Florida heat, humidity, and heavy use.

A concrete patio is the foundation of outdoor living in Northeast Florida. Done right, it handles the rain, the heat, the foot traffic, and the furniture without buckling, heaving, or cracking apart after a few summers. First Coast Concrete pours patios across Jacksonville and Duval County — from simple broom-finish slabs to elaborate stamped and colored outdoor living areas.

Jacksonvilles climate is hard on outdoor surfaces. The combination of intense UV exposure, high humidity, and summer rain events that dump 3 inches in 90 minutes means your patio needs proper drainage slope, the right concrete mix, and a finish that wont become a slip hazard when wet. We design and pour every patio with these conditions in mind.

Concrete Patio Contractors in Jacksonville

First Coast Concrete works with homeowners, builders, and property managers throughout Duval County and surrounding areas. We handle patio projects from small 200-square-foot back porch slabs to large multi-zone outdoor living areas with integrated steps, fire pit surrounds, and pool deck connections.

Our patio clients include:

  • Residential homeowners — new patios, patio expansions, replacement of aging slabs
  • Builders and remodelers — new construction outdoor living areas, add-on projects
  • Property investors — rental property improvements, value-add projects
  • HOAs — community gathering spaces, courtyard slabs, common area improvements

Before we pour anything, we assess your yards drainage patterns. Floridas sandy soils drain fast in many areas, but low spots and clay pockets can cause water to sit under a slab and erode the base. We set every patio with minimum 1/8” per foot slope away from the structure to keep water moving off the surface.

Our Concrete Patio Services

Every First Coast Concrete patio project follows a consistent process built for Northeast Florida conditions:

Site Assessment and Layout We mark the patio perimeter, check for underground utilities (Sunshine 811 call placed on every job), and assess drainage and grading needs. If existing sod, roots, or old concrete needs removal, thats handled before we form.

Subbase and Compaction The single most important step for patio longevity. We excavate to the correct depth, compact the native soil, and bring in 4 inches of compacted clean base material. Sandy Duval County soils compact well but require proper technique — we dont skip this step.

Forming and Reinforcement Forms are set level and to grade. Rebar (#3 or #4 depending on thickness) is placed on chairs at the correct height. For patios connecting to existing slabs or steps, we drill and epoxy rebar dowels into the existing concrete for a bonded connection.

Concrete Pour and Finishing Standard patio mix is 3,500–4,000 PSI with fiber reinforcement. We pour, screed, and finish to spec — broom, trowel, exposed aggregate, or stamp, depending on the design. Edges are tooled with a proper radius.

Control Joints Control joints are tooled into the fresh concrete at 8–10 foot intervals or saw-cut within 24 hours of pour. These are non-negotiable — without them, random cracking is inevitable.

Curing Curing compound is applied to the entire surface immediately after final finish. In summer, we schedule pours for early morning to avoid the hottest part of the day affecting set time.

Patio Installation and Finishing Options

Concrete patios offer more design variety than most homeowners expect:

Broom Finish The most practical and durable option. Consistent broom texture in straight lines or curved patterns. Excellent traction when wet — important for Northeast Floridas afternoon thunderstorms. Pairs well with a smooth or stamped border.

Exposed Aggregate River pebble or granite aggregate is seeded into the surface and exposed by washing. Beautiful natural texture, very high traction, holds up to UV without fading. A popular choice for pool deck adjacent patios and coastal properties.

Stamped Concrete The premium decorative option. Pattern stamps simulate slate, flagstone, cobblestone, brick, or wood plank. Combined with color hardener and antiquing release, stamped concrete creates a high-end look at a fraction of the cost of natural stone.

Popular Jacksonville patio stamp patterns include:

  • Ashlar slate — clean lines, versatile color options
  • Random stone — natural irregular look, pairs well with tropical landscaping
  • Herringbone brick — classic look for traditional homes
  • Wood plank — modern farmhouse aesthetic

Smooth Trowel Finish A steel-trowel burnished surface. Interior-quality smoothness, used for screened enclosure floors and covered lanai slabs where traction is less critical. Not recommended for open, exposed patios.

Colored Concrete Integral color is mixed into the concrete before pouring — color goes all the way through the slab, not just on the surface. No peeling, no repainting. Popular choices for Jacksonville patios include warm terra cotta tones, buff, and charcoal.

Steps and Transitions We form and pour matching concrete steps, knee walls, and transitions as part of the patio project. Matching the same finish and color throughout creates a cohesive outdoor living space.

Patio Repair and Restoration

Older Jacksonville patios often show their age through spalling, cracking, or settlement. Common repair scenarios:

Surface Spalling and Scaling Floridas UV and occasional freeze-thaw damage the surface layer of older concrete, causing flaking and roughening. Spalled surfaces can be ground smooth and resurfaced with a bonded overlay, restoring the appearance and adding 10–15 years of life.

Panel Cracking Individual cracked panels that havent settled can be repaired or replaced without disturbing adjacent sections. We saw-cut along the existing joint lines, remove the damaged panel, and repour to match.

Settlement and Uneven Sections Sections that have settled below adjacent panels create trip hazards and drain poorly. Causes include soil erosion, tree root decomposition, or original poor compaction. Options include slab lifting or panel replacement.

Expansion Joint Deterioration Joint sealant between slab sections breaks down over time, allowing water and debris intrusion. Resealing joints is a maintenance service that extends slab life significantly.

Why Jacksonville Homeowners Choose First Coast Concrete

Licensed, Insured, and Permit-Ready First Coast Concrete holds current Florida contractor licenses and full insurance coverage — general liability and workers compensation. If your patio project requires a Duval County building permit (common for attached slabs and screened enclosures), we handle the permitting in our name.

Free Estimates with No Pressure Patio quotes require a site visit — square footage is only part of the picture. We assess drainage, accessibility, finish requirements, and any demo or grading needed. You get a detailed written estimate. No deposit required to get a quote.

Local Experience That Shows Weve poured patios in every Jacksonville neighborhood. We know the drainage challenges in low-lying Westside properties, the root pressure from live oaks in Riverside, the soil conditions in newer St. Johns County developments. Frequently Asked Questions — Concrete Patios Jacksonville FL

How thick should a concrete patio be in Florida? Standard residential patios are 4 inches thick, which is appropriate for foot traffic, patio furniture, and normal outdoor use. Patios that will support a vehicle, a heavy hot tub, or heavy planters on a second-floor deck should be 5–6 inches. For covered lanai slabs and screened enclosure floors, 4 inches is standard. We specify the correct thickness at the estimate based on your intended use.

What is the best concrete finish for an outdoor patio in Jacksonville? For open, uncovered patios exposed to Florida rain, broom finish or exposed aggregate are the top choices — both provide excellent wet traction and UV durability. For covered lanais and screened porches, a smooth trowel finish works well. Stamped concrete is beautiful but should be sealed every 2–3 years in Floridas sun and rain to maintain appearance.

How long does it take to pour a concrete patio? For a typical residential patio (400–800 sq ft), the pour and finishing takes one day. Prep work (excavation, subbase, forming) usually happens the day before. After the pour, curing compound is applied and the patio needs to cure for 7 days before normal use and 28 days before placing heavy furniture or planters.

Can concrete be poured over my existing patio? If the existing slab is structurally sound and well-bonded, a concrete overlay or resurfacing is possible. However, this adds height — typically 1–2 inches — which creates transition challenges at doors and steps. If the existing slab is cracked through, settled, or poorly bonded, a full tear-out and repour is the better long-term solution. We assess the existing slab at the estimate and give you a straight answer.
